Primary Sense of the Term Justification {62} ENOUGH has now been said to make it appear that the controversy concerning Justification, agitated in these last centuries, mainly turns upon this question, whether Christians are or are not justified by observance of the Moral Law. I mean, this has been in matter of fact the point in dispute; whether, or how far, it has been a dispute of. Lectures on Justification uncovers the scriptural and historical understanding of justification within a sacramental tradition. Throughout these lectures, Newman defends justification as a free gift of God received through the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice.

Jun 11,  · The doctrine of justification is undoubtedly among the most important and most disputed doctrines in the history of the Christian Church. Central to the recovery of the faith once delivered to the saints at the time of the Reformation, it has been at the centre of assaults on that faith ever since. The Doctrine of Justification A. W. Pink So important did the Apostle Paul, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, deem this doctrine, that the very first of his epistles in the New Testament is devoted to a full exposition thereof.

Newman’s Lectures on the Doctrine of Justification are seldom read, but there is perhaps no better place to see his theological reasoning at work. The goals and method of the argument parallel those of Tract 90, which explicitly incorporates the conclusions arrived at in the Lectures. Newman wrote them, initially, to rebut charges of unorthodoxy, as defined by Anglican doctrinal formularies. The doctrine of justification is a legal understanding in which human sinners are declared righteous through Christ’s atoning death and sacrifice on the cross, removing our guilt and punishment for sin.
